Keep Your Lawn Green This Summer!
In the heat of summertime, browning lawns are a common sight. There are many factors that contribute to grass turning brown in the summer, including drought, scorching, and high traffic. That being said, there are some easy ways to keep your grass that healthy shade of green that you’ve been missing since the thermometer started to climb.
You don’t have to settle for a brown lawn! Follow these simple tips to help keep your lawn green this summer, and have the picture perfect lawn you’ve always wanted.
Water Efficiently
While you may be tempted to drench your lawn every chance you get at the first sign of browning, don’t be fooled. Overwatering is just as much of a problem as under watering!
During the hot summer months, your lawn needs about 1-1.5 inches of water per week to stay healthy. The key isn’t just how much you are watering, but how. It’s important to water very early in the day, before the sun comes up, so the water has a chance to get to the roots before being evaporated. But be careful not to saturate the roots too much, or you could get root diseases that can harm your grass.
Longer and Stronger
We get it. It’s summer – and it’s hot. The last thing you want to do is cut your lawn more often than you have to, so you cut it close when you mow. While that tactic might be good for you, it’s bad for your grass. Instead, mow your grass higher and more frequently to keep your lawn healthy and happy. Longer grass blades shade the roots so they can absorb water and nutrients better, keeping your grass stronger.
Don’t Tread on Me
The heat makes you tired, and your grass is no different. If your lawn is showing brown spots, it’s a sign of stress, so think about how much traffic passes over your lawn. Is that space where your kids play soccer? Is it your path to the shed? In the summertime, limit the amount of traffic your lawn receives to keep the stress on the turf to a minimum.
But let’s face it, it is summertime. With all the fun activities that you have planned, do you truly have the time to devote to keeping your lawn pristine and green? If you’re like many homeowners, the process of keeping a lawn healthy is best left to the professionals.
